E S T O N I A

Estonian history is a tale of conquerors, the story of a small culture that has managed to preserve its language and sense of national identity throughout its long history of invaders. Yet this is what makes it so unique, in the space of an afternoon you can come across Russian Orthodox onion domes, German manor houses and Danish castles. Estonia is a world of primitive forests, rolling hills, lakes and legends. The border country between Russia and Estonia offers an ancient hill-fort, the 19th century Puhtitsa convent in Kuremae, and the ruins of Vasknarva castle built by the German Knights of the Sword.

AREAS OF INTEREST

TALLINN - a medieval Town Hall (1371-1404) dominates the square. Tallinn is one of Europe’s few medieval cities still wrapped in its original defensive walls and gates - Viru Gate and Great Coast Gate. Tallinn’s crooked streets and hidden courtyards are an irresistible reminder of medieval days in this fairy tale city. Atop Tallinn’s Toompea are the 13th century Dome Cathedral, Toompea Castle and the onion domes of Russian Orthodox Alexander Nevsky Cathedral.

ROCCA AL MARE - This open-air museum is located four miles from the center of Tallinn. A walking tour through a beautiful forest area on the seacoast provides authentic examples of 18-19th century rural architecture including farmhouses, country pubs, and windmills displayed with authentic interior furnishings.

TARTU - This university town’s history dates back to 1030 AD. Only two of the original medieval buildings exist today, the rest are Classical and Baroque. Tartu University was founded in 1632 and today’s students energize the city.

PARNU - a beach town dating back to medieval times is a popular summer destination for Estonians. The city is a fascinating blend of art deco and onion domes, medieval gates and Soviet quirkiness, villas and well-tended gardens. Parnu’s old Communist party headquarters were recently turned into an art gallery, theatre, children’s center and coffee shop, all dedicated to Charlie Chaplin.

LAAHEMA NATIONAL PARK - This National Park is located 60 km from Tallinn and offers a typical North Estonia seacoast landscape. A day tour includes Palmse and Sagadi manors, the fishing village of Altja, the resort of Vosu and the village of Kasmu.

SAAREMAA - Estonia's largest island was barely touched by Soviet industry and immigration and retains the appearance and pace of agricultural pre-WWII Estonia. Mainland Estonians call Saaremaa the "old Estonia".
