L A T V I A

Latvia is the largest of the three Baltic Republics. Geographically it is a country of rolling plains, gentle hills, beautiful valleys and more than 5,000 lakes. Forests, marshes and fields cover the countryside, providing magnificent opportunities for hiking, boating and other outdoor activities during the warm months of summer, and cross country skiing in winter. There is an abundance of Baroque, Gothic, Classical and Art Nouveau architecture in the small medieval towns, country museums, ruined fortresses and, occasionally, grand palaces.

 AREAS OF INTEREST

RIGA - Cobbled streets, superb architecture from the medieval to Art Nouveau, and an Old City that rivals Prague are but a few of the fascinating aspects of Riga. The magnificent Dome Cathedral, the Pulvertornis tower of 1330, the old city walls, the Art Nouveau houses on Alberta iela and Kalku iela, which is the Fifth Avenue of Riga. The old city (Vecriga), was not damaged by war nor disfigured by modern development is totally pedestrianized, is a delight to explore.

OPEN-AIR ETHNOGRAPHIC MUSEUM - Set among trees by a lake outside of Riga it evokes country life of the past. More than 120 wooden buildings from all over the country have been re-erected in natural surroundings, ranging from an inn, a church, a farmstead to a fishermen’s’ hut.

SIGULDA - One of the most picturesque towns in Latvia, Sigulda is located about 50 km from Riga in the Gauja River Valley. Experience a whiff of the Middle Ages, a time of romantic legends, castles and heroic figures. Travel down into the river valley, walk the sandstone grottoes, continue to the 13th century Turaida Castle and visit the local History Museum. See the ruins of the 13th century Crusader Castle and the 19th century Kropotkin Palace.

CESIS - This delightful medieval Hanseatic town is 90 km from Riga. A tour includes a stroll through the narrow streets passing the 13th century Order of Knight’s Castle and the Church of St. John together with a visit to the History Museum in the New Palace.

RUNDALE PALACE - Is the 18th century jewel in the crown of Latvia’s great houses. Once the summer residence of the Duke of Courland it was designed by the architect of St. Petersburg’s Winter Palace. Thanks to restoration it is hard to believe that the Germans used it as a granary during World War II.
