THE TEMPLES OF ANGKOR

3 nights / 4 days

From the 9th to 13th century, Angkor was the heart of a rich and sophisticated civilization. You will see massive stone monuments, wide majestic causeways, imposing gateways and towers, all in a wonderful jungle setting.

Day 2:               Start your exploration of Angkor with a visit the great city of Angkor Thom, visit the famous Bayon Temple, Phimeanakas Temple within the Royal Palace enclosure, Baphuon Temple, the Terrace of the Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper King.

Experience the beauty of Angkor Wat, this architectural masterpiece was constructed in the 12th century. It has many galleries with columns, libraries, pavilions, courtyards and ponds full of water, carved low-reliefs about Ramayana Story and day-to-day life at the time of Angkor's construction. End the day with a sunset view of Angkor temples.

Day 3:  This morning head to the outlying Banteay Srei Temple, “The Citadel of Women,” with its rose colored, sandstone walls that many consider to be the best carvings of any temple at Angkor. The quality of the carving and the state of preservation make Banteay Srei extraordinary.

On our return visit Sras Srang, the royal pool is situated opposite the East gate of Banteaym Kdei, known as the King's bathing pond. From Banteay Kdei, continue to Takeo and jungle-clad Ta Prohm.

In 1975 this former high school was taken over by Pol Pot’s security forces and turned into a prison known as Security Prison 21 (S-21). It was used by the Khmer Rouge as detention and torture center. Next, visit the killing field of Choeung Ek. The killing fields contain mass graves, slightly sunken, for perhaps 20,000 Cambodians. A memorial building stands in the center of the killing fields. Transfer back to city or to the airport.
